Pig ears for dogs - pork hide treats - what are they?

Where do they come from?

How are they made?

Pig Ears

In many parts of the world, pig ears are consumed and relished by humans as a great delicacy. In the USA, they're reserved mainly as treats for our canine companions.

Pig ears are high in fat, they should be reserved as chew treat choice for a very special occasion, certainly not a whole ear on a daily basis.

Where do pig ears and pork hide treats come from?
The quality of pork hide is often related to its country of origin:

USA pig ears and pork hide: Because of the high quality feeds used, USA pork hides are generally thicker and provide a longer lasting chew. USA pig ears are the largest, most economical purchase.

During repeated salmonella contamination outbreaks, USA pork hides and pig ears were consistently found to be disease free.

Foreign imports: Generally smaller ears and thinner hides.

Infrequent reports of Salmonella infections.

How are pork hide treats and pig ears processed?
The animal's hide is transported to processing plants where it is split, washed, and cleaned. The hides are then cut, formed and dried into many varieties of pork hide treats you see in the stores. In less developed countries a lack of modern roads and refrigeration trucks often requires the use of preservatives to get skins from outer-lying areas to processing plants. In the U.S. fresh pork hides and ears are refrigerated during shipping to prevent degradation , spoilage, fouling and the need for chemical additives.
How do I tell Country of Origin?
Country of Origin is required packaging information. Look closely for indications of imitations of U.S. pork-hide such as "Made from U.S. pork-hide in China or Mexico" or "Product of S America." This is a further indication that even the importers recognize the value of U.S. pork-hide.
How often should I feed pig ears and pork hide chews?
Pig ears and other pork skin products generally have low nutritional benefits and are high in fat. We recommend them as a special "occasional" treat.
Which size and shape should I chose?
Fortunately, chews come in every size and shape imaginable. It is important that the chew be large enough and thick enough that your dog cannot easily chew off and swallow a large piece or the whole chew.
Which dogs should not have chews?
If your dog has gastrointestinal disease or is eating a therapeutic diet, you should seek a veterinarian's approval before feeding any chews. Dogs with pork allergies or that consistently swallow bones whole should probably not receive chews unattended.
